OneToOne Driver Training - FAQ & Sound Advice

The goal of all involved in driver training and testing is to improve safety on our roads. To make you a cut above most other motorists it's always a good idea to take further training after passing your test.

Do examiners have a pass quota?

Contrary to popular belief examiners do not have their pass quota. Simply, if you are a competent driver and can demonstrate this then you will be awarded a pass. The national average is 49.5%

I'm nervous, do you have any advice?

There's no easy solution for nerves but, if it helps, you can ask for your instructor to sit in on the test. They are not allowed to say anything though.

What happens if I get points after passing my test?
If you get six penalty points in the first two years after passing your test you will return to learner status. Over 15,000 newly qualified drivers have lost their licences so far! An amazing fact and sobering thought.

Do you have any guidance on the day of my test?
Going too slow and being over cautious. People think it is better to be a bit slower on their test. You create a hazard and could frustrate other motorists by doing this and missing opportunities at junctions. If on the open road with a national speed limit, and providing it's safe, you should drive to the speed limit and use 5th gear if appropriate. Remember to adjust your speed when returning to an area with a lower speed limit.

Should I practice as well as have driving lessons?
When you are ready and if possible practice in between lessons with a friend or relative. Make sure they are insured for you, over 21 and passed their test over 3 years ago. Don't continue if this results in tensions, it could do more harm than good.

There are so many instructors offering driving tuition at different prices, what is the difference?
All qualified instructors are graded by a special examiner. Below is a guide to the grades. There are also trainee instructors who themselves are learning to teach.
